That article about Wagner was interesting. His wearing of a hat - perhaps that put pressure on some of the blood vessels to restrict the pain? Maybe he just thought it helped. He was so creative, in spite of it all.

Re the brain - and that is only one organ of the body. I cant believe this amazing machine, with all its inherent problems as well, is accidental. The internet is obviously not accidental, but because were made of meat we are?

I think the only reason the poor and powerless are allowed to live is so the rich and powerful can use them. Nobody could be so naïve as to think the world got this way accidentally. Wars are created. Apart from a few skirmishes, most people are happy to leave well enough alone if they have food, shelter and health. The really obvious disasters can be predicted by very dumb people, so why would smart people go ahead with stupid plans? And most of the advances in technology benefited the wealthy because they no longer had to pay wages. I think we need to get back to a bit of self sufficiency in our own back yards. Farm in pots if you have no yard. We have lost the art of growing our own food. It truly is as good as printing money - and its legal!

I am unable to work for health reasons, Kevin, and in Queensland they have the right to dismiss you after 12 months of sick leave. And the medical expert said I may never be fit for work again. I think that might be the most upsetting bit, to be honest. Anyway, not to worry. Im sheltered and well fed. Thats better than the majority of people on the planet.

Im free as a

dove

now.

dent

in human capacity. Beethoven wrote spectacular music while being deaf. I used to be able to get the basic tune of something via reading the music - although Im just self-taught, and have forgotten most of what I knew, like you, Michael, through lack of use.

Love your poem, Kevin! Took your point re the prodigal and I appreciate it.

I lost my job today. It was expected, after almost 18 months on sick leave. But the prognosis of the medical expert upset me a lot, and I am still going to pursue what legal issues I can. Just very sad tonight, and may feel better after a decent sleep.

It would, Michael, and Id probably complain about that, too! LOL What would humans talk about if not for the weather?

Kevin - where were your poems published? I have had a couple of religious articles published - in the time when I was a real Christian - as well as a poem - doggerel, really, but with a good point - on the cover of the same magazine. I was even paid for them at the time, and I felt so shamefully proud! LOL

My father always loved poetry, and he once wrote some that were really very good. I have them somewhere - packed away inaccessibly. He also wrote articles for Fur and Feather magazine in England, re the breeding of Old English Game fowl. I think my sister has all the copies of those magazines.

It must be much harder these days to get a book published in print. I know people still buy them, but we have changed to a mostly electronic society now. Its a shame, but the convenience is real.

I love going to the book section in stores and having a

peek

at some of the new and trending titles. Sadly, no more Terry Pratchett books to look for now.

Kevin, have you written other novels? Names, please? Im interested. I seem to know a lot of writers these days. I was never creative enough for fiction. Id have been a good journalist - in the days before news became cheap entertainment.

The work thing drags on, but they have caught on that I mean business. Now they are denying having sent the information - although I asked for clarity on that, as they might mean they sent other things as well. The legislation they sent me is contained in their policies, and still has no bearing on the issue at hand. Never mind. I have lots of good things happening as well.

Its so hot here today. No records or anything, but its going to be 36C, and in my converted tin shed - raked ceilings - thats a bit warm. I always long for autumn at this point in summer. I love the longer days, but Ill happily accept the trade off for some coolness.

Ah, the mighty huntress! LOL

Im glad that there appears to be a start of an improvement for you, Michael. Cross fingers, and I hope it turns out to be a real help.

My son loves Indian food - but not the hot curries. He likes the flavours, but light on the chili. I cant say I particularly like many Indian dishes. I like a lot of the milder spices like turmeric. The last time I bought Indian food, I had something that initially tasted okay, but after a while I disliked it. It may have had cilantro in it. Chinese - and the modern variations on it - are my favourites. I know it isnt original, but Chinese lemon or honey chicken are delicious. I love salt and pepper tofu, and their omelettes. I like steamed or fried rice, but no pork. And I always ask them to leave out the oyster sauce. I dislike that intensely.

It has been so long since I ate out. I never liked making a fuss just for a meal, when I could make it at home for a quarter of the price, but its nice sometimes. I do buy take away meals, though. Today I had an appointment in Hervey Bay, and I hadnt eaten at all in the morning, so I shouted myself a kebab (in a wrap, not on a stick) and a fancy coffee made on soy milk. I couldnt swallow properly - Im going through a harder time with that lately - so I ended up bringing it home in all its soggy glory. I still like the flavour, even when theyre soggy. I got caught in a dreadful storm on the way, too.

I found out my workplace has received the IME report, and I think Ill be sacked by next Friday. I am going to sue them for breach of privacy, if I can afford it. They sent a lot of my information from a different claim to the IME without my authority. They have no respect, and they are trying to avoid discussing the matter. I hardly have the energy to take them on, but I will. They have treated me shabbily, and I dont feel like being nice about anything. The worst is that I will not be allowed access to the medical report, even though they are deciding my future based on it. It makes me feel powerless and very angry.

Never mind. Thats life. Now, you are going to have to tell me all about your

meat

and everything you have tomorrow. I can pretend I was there. :o) Is the restaurant very far from your place?

From what I read about German law, hardly anyone is charged for small amounts. Im not being awful, and as Ive said before, I believe in prohibition, and I am dead against the social use of substances, including alcohol. However, you have such a terrible medical problem that you have to try what you can. If you could holiday in, say, the Netherlands and stay long enough to get a migraine, that would be a perfect opportunity to experiment and see if it helps. I think it actually would stop the vomiting. Whether it made your headaches any worse is another thing.

Have you tried or considered cannabis? Probably illegal there (as it is here), but they give extracts to people who have terrible nausea from chemotherapy and it works well. You are not far from countries that allow it, and I would certainly be trying it. Heroin is illegal here but we should have it for effective pain relief.

Oh - I know that drug! Are you finding your eyesight is affected? The local doctor put me on that for the aura I get, when it was becoming annoying. The flashing takes a half hour or so to stop and leaves me a bit sick in the stomach - wouldnt even register on your scale of unwellness. I couldnt stand it. I had blurred vision, and my mouth was dry. I was also having bad palpitations (I have them because of my heart issues, but they were really made a lot worse), so I had to stop. I know they work well for some, though, and I think it is only in recent years that they have discovered their effect on migraine. They are an old and well known drug, though. I really hope you get a good result from them, Michael, and that they

suit

your condition. Is it possible to use the suppositories more often when you are okay as a preventative or is that not practical? Obviously they are a drug and they may not work that way or it may be too much.

There is a lot of criminality in profit making. I once fell over in a previous workplace. Well, that was an understatement. I came running out the front door, went down two only steps, lost my footing, did an amazing ballet trying to stay upright, then fell hard on my knees and hands and rolled into a hollow in the footpath made by someone parking his four wheel drive there all the time. Because my feet were higher than my head, and I was sort of shocked, I couldnt get out of the hole! LOL This, I might add, was on a major highway with hundreds of cars passing, but nowhere to pull over. Finally a driver stopped down the road and came running back to help. At the same time someone in the workplace spotted me, and I suffered the humiliation of being sat on a chair on the side of the road, covered in blood, stockings torn, and covered in dirt. The worst was that I was late to be driving to Brisbane to pick up my granddaughters on a rare occasion from their school, but I had to go home and shower and rinse the dirt and stones out of my wounds as well.

Because I claimed workers compensation, a local doctor sent me for a barrage of unnecessary tests. He wanted me to have x-rays of my hands and the other knee, which wasnt too badly hurt. 25 in total. I just refused and asked the radiographer to take just the necessary ones. I believe that doctor had a deal with the radiology company. It was scandalous, really. But my right knee was very badly hurt, and I didnt want to set the doctor against me by saying anything, as I needed a few days off work. By the time I got to Brisbane, I could hardly walk, and my knee stiffened up for several days. It was really painful driving as well.

I kind of digressed, but I meant to just talk about the over-servicing. LOL I came down with a

thud

and I learned my lesson and was more careful after that. My only female worker was a smoker, and she fell down a much longer flight of stairs there one day. She had been going outside for a cigarette, and when she landed on her back on the ground, her cigarette was safe! So she stayed on the ground and smoked it before trying to get up! LOL

All along that section of the coast is magnificent. I hate the tourism, but I love the beauty. Where I lived was further inland, but it was still extremely pretty. Then just a few kilometres and you were up on the mountains and could look all the way down to the beaches in the distance. Millionaire country, sadly, as everyone wants to live there. Only an hour from Brisbane, too, so you can have the best of both worlds. Gesine, you would love Airlie Beach near Mackay, in north Queensland. Immaculate white sands. An amazing place. Sadly, its hardly affordable these days because of tourism. Heres a pic: http://s1.at.atcdn.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/017-Whitsundays4.jpg There was a smaller version near Bundaberg at Elliott Heads when I was raising my son. When the tide was out there was miles of sand and shallow water. Really picturesque. It was about 25ks as I recall from Bundaberg, but we used to swim there a lot. http://i1.au.reastatic.net/800x600/584ee1d6e9459068e52a7eaab088dcde078daf80ba99b50dcceb17fc30d7ebcd/image10.jpg

Regarding the houses, its all about the building here. Yes, if there is more land, a place is more expensive, usually, but while real estate agents may work on a formula, there is no common rule for price per metre. If you have a nice house on a small block, you will get more for it that a terrible house on a larger block. That is, unless its in a select area. They are selling old sheds in Sydney for a million dollars. Where I am, all the house lots are a quarter acre - in the old measurements. Roughly 1011 square metres. A comfortable size for a large house and a yard big enough for a family, a garden and a chicken coop. :o)

I find it odd that Hamburg - a smaller place - is more expensive. What are the reasons for that, do you think?

Some gorgeous scenes there, Michael. Brisbane is full of trees, but not as lovely as these. And only a few nature reserves. 18% is great planning. Queensland in general is one of the fastest growing States. A lot of southerners want to come here for the warm climate and beaches. Unfortunately, like Berlin, that pushes up the rents everywhere, because they are used to paying high rents elsewhere. And if there is a tertiary education place like a university or branch of a uni, people are very inclined to live there and raise their kids. When I left Bundaberg the population was around 50,000 people. You could still buy land and build a new house for $50,000. They had just built a branch of a university there. When I went back to visit a few years later, the prices had leapt to $120,000 average. Areas in town that had big open fields were now built out. It was a changed place. The population in the whole region had virtually doubled.

Refugees are such a difficult issue. I cant blame people for seeking asylum, but I understand some of the problems that come with that. If Western countries would stop bombing other countries, none of this would be happening. If its a so-called war on terror, it certainly hasnt worked.

Berlin is the size, roughly, of Melbourne. A lot of Europeans like Melbourne. The climate is familiar, and it had a lot of European immigrants , so the environment reflects that. The odd thing about Melbourne is that its home to many extremely wealthy people, and also the crime capital. Sydney is the most violent as far as behavioural stuff, but Melbourne is home to the crime syndicates and they have more shootings than elsewhere. Even the police are trigger happy, and they have shot dead so many people who were just mentally ill and waving a knife around, when they could have shot them in the leg to stop them. My sister loved it. She lived there for a lot of years.

So the contrast is the

posh

and the crooked.

Someone has to

stop

it all, as it has become ridiculous. Sydney is classed as one of the most expensive cities in the world. Only double income families, or the wealthy can afford to live close to the city, and to buy is impossible. Poor people on fixed incomes cant possibly even pay rent in most places these days. I live in one of the cheaper places, and a house is still about $300 for a basic place. Something nice would be $450 per week or more.

Where I lived on the Sunshine Coast was incredibly expensive. Most houses were at least $500K to buy - and that was for just a basic house. Many, many houses were in the millions. And there were hardly any rentals.

Berlin really sounds reasonable, though, and from what Ive seen of it, its a really pretty place.

Wow! Thats an awful lot of money. I know with chronic health problems you need it, but Im quite shocked by that. Im also impressed with your cheap rent in a city like Berlin. Sydney rents average around 500 dollars per week for a one or two bedroom unit in a less pleasant suburb with about an hours travel on the train to the city. You can get cheaper a lot further out, but they are not nice.

rent can be a real

trap

Over here, the workplace has nothing to do with your health care. The reason I wont get private insurance - apart from the large payments - is that I also cant afford to pay the gap. That is squarely paid by the consumer. So if the government or private fund will pay a certain amount of money, the specialist can charge whatever he wants, and you have to pay the difference. I can see a specialist privately without cover, and the government pays a set amount, and I pay the balance. Some funds offer to pay it all, but the payment is higher. There is almost no hospital cover that will pay it all, so not only do I pay thousands for private cover, at the end of it I am still in debt. Thats ridiculous. In a public hospital I may be in a bed next to a private patient and we eat the same, are cared for the same, but they can choose their doctor and I have to take pot luck. If I was rich enough I wouldnt mind. But I refuse to be robbed every which way of my money when there is a perfectly good alternative in our free health scheme.

Unlike your country, we get our refunds the same day from a private specialist visit. We pay, then a machine refunds the government contribution amount to our bank account. Alternatively - as not all surgeries have those machines - we take our receipts in to the local social security office, and they put the refund straight into our bank accounts the same day.

The benefits for civil servants are excellent in Germany, even if it takes a while to get them paid.
