Im going to get back to you on this, Michael. I have been a bit busy. My sons birthday was the 26th (its about 1:30am on the 27th as I type) so I spent today doing some things with and for him. Hes 39 now. When Your kid turns 40, you know you have one foot in the grave! LOL I looked at the weather comparisons. What different climates we live in - and Brisbane is different again from where I am. Ill see if I can find something as thorough as the ones you posted for the local area. Your rainfall certainly looks well-placed. I just need to sleep now, but Ill get back to you. I loved reading your post.

Are your summers the dry season? In Queensland, summer is the rainy season (although autumn appears to have forgotten that this last week!) and winter is usually dry. Its the reverse in the southern states. If summer is your dry, then you may be reacting to the barometric pressure like my friend. She has to have air conditioning to keep the humidity at bay.

Do you take vitamin D if youre not in the sun much? In the US they fortify their milk with Vit D, but its bitter. I guess they dont taste it and are used to it. My son was four when we were there, and he refused to drink it. If the glass was full of ice, that killed the taste a bit, and my friend found a health food store with non-fortified milk, so we worked around that.

Melbourne is a terrible place weather-wise. Every time I have been there, Ive had to carry coats and umbrellas because the temperature can change in a moment. Freezing in the morning, tropical by 10am, rain, cold again, on and on. Lots of people like the city, but the climate is dreadful.

Whats your favourite part of Germany, Michael? And Im sure you told me before, but my memory is not good - how far afield have you travelled?

If I was a young

lass

again, Id see the world.

Have you been headache-free lately, Michael? It would be nice if it could

last

longer in between headaches. Does any particular season affect you more? My friend in Kentucky, USA, gets migraines when its humid.

Autumn is still struggling to start here, but there has been a drop in temperature at night. We need doonas at night, and the air conditioner for a couple of hours during the day. In a few weeks well be running around in long pants, but definitely not yet.

Is beetroot commonly eaten there? If so, how? And is it just the deep purple variety? I know you have sugar beets somewhere. Ive never actually seen one. Can they also be cooked and eaten? I have to

hand

it to most countries - they make nice food out of what is available, and the flavouring is often unique, yet it suits the food.

I have been fairly good eating big plates of dry roasted veges and lots of fruit, but today my son wanted to go to town and get a few things, and he wanted take away. I ended up eating a McVomit burger - a sausage and egg McMuffin, no cheese. I think I had a weeks worth of salt, and I found it hard to eat. Its doing me good to be right off the meat most of the time. I have discovered the delights of roasted beetroot. In Australia, we traditionally ate mostly canned beetroot which was prepared with vinegar, when I was growing up. As an adult, I finally boiled them and I quite like them with no vinegar. I simply had never tried them roasted, and I am amazed at the flavour and sweetness. I hate using oil, so I put a bit of hot water in the baking dish, and a bit more if they get too dry. Its just so easy. Apply heat and things cook and you dont have to pay too much attention. The weather has cooled slightly, so its almost soup weather. Is it warming up over there?

The forum here is very inactive, and many people arent posting much these days. However, its certainly worth a try, and it would be good for those who can to be in touch like that.

From my point of view, my concept of British take away is that obviously in the cities there is huge variety, but Indian dominates in the way Chinese was the dominant introduced food here - with a very long history. Our meat pies are based on the British ones. People - family - I have spoken to who have been there werent impressed with a lot of it. My Dad, who didnt drink at all, went to pubs when he was there with his sister, and said he was impressed with all the free food like pickled eggs that were offered to the drinkers. I have since been told that you never eat them because people just dig in with their unwashed hands. My Dad didnt die, and I believe he did eat them. :) But its hard to judge unless you live in a country for a while, isnt it?

A lot of Australians still like to grab a meat pie or sausage roll, a chiko roll (meat and cabbage), or a spring roll - not really anything like the nice Asian varieties, but big things full of cabbage and lord knows what other gristly stuff, and a few spices. I quite like them, but they are grease balls, and you have to have nerves of steel to eat that much fat! LOL Fish and chip shops, where you can get a variety of fish kinds, generally also make hamburgers.

I think many places are spoiled for choice these days. I just wish the big American chains hadnt taken over so much. You cant get ethnic food in its own country any more. Thats my

rant

for the moment. LOL

Yes, I love apple Danish or berry Danish. The curried sausages are interesting. Apart from American style burgers (Hungry Jacks - which is Burger King, and McDonalds offer police half price burgers to ensure there is a police presence there), I dont think its typical police fare, but we have meat pies as a very traditional take-away. Mutton and peppery gravy filling in a case of flaky pastry. And all kinds of variations on the theme, especially today as our palates are more sophisticated. One of my favourites locally is a garlic chicken triangle - a creamy garlic chicken filling wrapped in a triangle of flaky pastry. They only make a few each day, and you cant always get them. I rarely buy them now, anyway, but I was raised eating a meat pie with scalding gravy running all over your hands and burning your mouth as the food you bought when the family was out and about. A lot of food-related memories from the

past.

Okay - those are the doner kebabs we get. I just love them. I like barbecue sauce, and plenty of salad with mushrooms and olives, and sometimes pineapple as well. I only ever get chicken or falafel ones. Are yours toasted after wrapping in a sandwich press? Honestly, they are just my most favourite take-away, but there is only one place locally that makes them. When I go to Hervey Bay I always buy one. They have a few more places. Shish kebabs are common, too. In our state and New South Wales, they are called kebabs, but in the southern states they are called gyros - the Greek version. Of course, there are a lot of cultural and food similarities between the Greeks and Turks. And because many Greek people came here in the 1950s, and generally settled in the Southern states, that is why the name differs.

When I was seeing my granddaughters, on the trip out of Brisbane I would stop at a roadhouse where there was a kebab shop. An Indian man ran it and he offered a selection of various Indian stews and samosas that were to die for. I would buy a kebab and eat it in the car park, and always a few samosas and whatever else appealed to take home and reheat. The food was so good. Sadly, they closed.

I love cinnamon sugar coated macadamias.

None of the food I like is

posh

and it tends to be hearty. Im trying so hard to be good, though, and Im doing moderately well. You should have seen the size of the piece of champagne (yellow) watermelon I had yesterday! It was divine, and my local rainbow lorikeets have been feeding on the remains all day. They love eating watermelon and pawpaw - any fruit, really, as they are nectar eating parrots.

Is a kebap the same as a kebab? Describe it. We also have Dunkin Donuts - theres one in town. I find them very rich and stodgy. The very best doughnuts I have tasted, and I swear they are made with heroin, are Krispy Kremes - the American ones. Their plain glazed are to die for, particularly when fresh, soft and aromatic. Sadly, they are made with milk, and I have to avoid them. The closest place to get them is in a roadhouse on the Bruce Highway about two and a half hours from here, anyway. Our common doughnuts are either plain round and dipped in sugar and cinnamon, long and thin, cut down the middle, filled with mock or fresh cream and a dollop of raspberry jam (also rolled in cinnamon sugar), or big round ones with no hole, rolled in cinnamon sugar and with a big dollop of raspberry jam in the centre. Its always interesting to learn about the common good and bad foods of each country.

Just as long as its not spicy and not made with coriander, which tastes like

soap

or worse, to me, Ill give it a try.

In New York I tried a cannoli - a pastry wrapped around a custardy filling - and fell in love with them. Couldnt get them here in those days, but you can now.

I still fail to see how evolution can possibly happen. Honestly. And years ago they said things like the appendix were useless, then found out they make white blood cells. So we may find another reason even for a muscle.

Regardless of where we came from, were not doing too well with the way we treat the planet. Its hard to find organic farms anywhere because we have tainted the soil for years, and GMO crops have pollen spread by the wind. The food tastes wonderful, though. Its about four times the price here and limited. I love the sweetness of organic onions and carrots. And organic tomatoes are to die for.

Gesine, cutting out meat and salty foods for a month or so will lower it. Plus cut right down on anything with caffeine. I just have to do it because the medication doesnt agree with me. Even fluid tablets dont work for me, though I can be puffed up with fluid. Do you take medication? The only things Ive ever been able to tolerate are beta-blockers, but they slow my heart rate and make me chronically tired, so exercise is not desirable, plus, it doesnt get my heart rate up enough to benefit in that way. It certainly is better than not exercising.

I officially declare four letter words as exercise. There. Tell your doctors! Being a bit lighthearted has to lower your

I have a sphygmomanometer. I wasnt really using it recently, then I went to the doctor to get my echo results, and he took it. It was something like 213 over 70 and he told me if it was still more than 200 an hour after going straight home, to call an ambulance. LOL Fortunately it dropped, and I filled up on meds. Ive been taking it regularly and it has been really high too often for comfort. I think it has been for a long time. I get really angry and irritable when its high, Ive noticed. But I cant tell. I have to test it.

I cant swallow anything too rough these days, so I often get white. I love a nice heavy wholemeal with lots of grains. Theres a nine grain one that tastes good. I like light rye, but almost never buy it. Some of them have milk as an ingredient here. Theres a soy and linseed loaf that ALDI makes, and I like the flavour of that. Its not as difficult to eat, so I buy that sometimes - when I go to ALDI, which isnt all the time. I dont eat a lot of bread, but I do in binges. Sometimes Im on a salad sandwich craze, and Ill eat a lot then. I almost never use butter or margarine, but sometimes if Im craving something sweet, Ill have some margarine and honey on fresh bread or toast. The nicest bread I ever tasted was a white loaf made at a Vietnamese bakery in Brisbane. They follow the French style with bread. I worked at a clinic, and one of the other counsellors would always bring a loaf to work. It was to die for! The crust was crisp, not tough, and the yeasty flavour was just perfect. They used to sell out by 9am every day, often earlier. I used to sometimes drive across town just to buy a loaf, but then they moved. *sigh*

I did buy too much. I went shopping hungry, which is always my downfall. I hadnt eaten at all, so I bought far too much. I came home and demolished a stack of grapes first, to get my blood sugar up. They were so nice. Im going to try to have mostly plant foods to work on my blood pressure, and Im cutting out any added salt where possible. Im a bit weak and am likely to not stick to it completely, but I have to do something.
