They are many, many meters below the seals and swim up very fast trying to grab a seal along the way to the top where the seals are. When they go that fast they can't stop, so they 'jump' out of the water.

Seals have been playing the old game of survival with sharks for the past million years or so, maybe more. This little seal had a new trick written in his genetic code. I mean the seal on the photograph.

I've never understood why tourists would pay to watch animals eat each other. A great photo, though!
