Pinta is a great solution if easy editing is your goal. It's a bit of a mix between Microsoft's basic Paint program and Photoshop. But don't be fooled by its simplicity. It's quite powerful.

Pinta includes all of the basic tools you'd expect: color correction, brushes, a clone stamp and a number of selection tools.

But it also has the more advanced features as well. For example, you can create multiple layers, and you get full history tracking.
